Alice J. “A.J.” Stiles “One of a kind”
COUDERSPORT, PA---Alice J. “A.J.” Stiles, 84, a lifelong resident of Coudersport, passed away with her loving family by her side on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in UPMC Cole, Coudersport, after a short illness.
Born on Thursday, March 14, 1940, in Bethlehem, PA, she was a daughter of Edward Chester Snyder Sr. and Hila M. Pearsall Snyder Euken. She was the stepdaughter of Otto (Shiner) Euken. A.J. was first married to Sam Long who she had 5 children with and in 1977 married Ted Stiles, who passed away on March 28, 2012.
A.J. obtained her GED while raising her family as a single mother. At age 62, she received her medical coding certification from Pitt Bradford after her position was terminated due the closing of Midland Optical in Coudersport.
For many years she and her husband, Ted, owned and operated Ted & A.J.’s Snack Shop in Coudersport. She also had been employed by the former Sears Store in Coudersport and had been a bartender at various establishments in the area. She was known for “A.J.’s Cussin Club” at the former Northwoods Restaurant. The monies collected for “cussin” funded her yearly pig roast.
A.J. was a member of the Red Hat Ladies Society and was very involved with Potter County Special Olympics, having served in many capacities in the organization. She was a member of Potter Post 192 Ladies Auxiliary in Coudersport, a member of the Office Girls in Coudersport, a Board member of A Way Out and a member of the Coudersport Senior Center.
A.J. was the Baroness of Sealand. She loved camping, going to the casino, and playing cards. She was known as the card shark of the game 31. She loved her shoes, but her greatest love was her family.
Left to cherish her memory are five children, Shelley A. (Bill) Butler of Coudersport, Lisa K. Stiffler of Elkland, Rick W. “Ricko” (Tabatha) Long of Coudersport, Curtiss J. (Michelle) Long of Coudersport, and Jeffrey T. (Danielle) Long of Erin, NY; four stepchildren, including Jeffrey M. (Karen) Stiles of Smethport; thirteen grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, her stepfather, Otto (Shiner) Euken, and her husband, A.J. was predeceased by her seven siblings. She was the last of eight children.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of A.J.’s life from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the Coudersport American Legion, Buffalo Street, Coudersport, where a Remembrance service will follow at 3pm with Wes Olney, family friend, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in A.J.’s name may be made to the Coudersport Senior Center, 200 W Chestnut Street, Coudersport, PA 16915.
A.J.’s family entrusted her care and cremation arrangements, to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
