Daniel J. âJamieâ Barkley, Jr. âbeloved husband, father, son and friendâ
RICHBURG, NY---Daniel J. âJamieâ Barkley, Jr., 46, a lifelong resident of Richburg, passed away while at work at the Allegany County Jail, Belmont, on Sunday, July 14, 2013, after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Born September 21, 1966 in Cuba, NY, he was a son of Daniel J. and Linda L. Davison Barkley, Sr. On April 16, 1994 in Shinglehouse, PA, he married Wendy L. Green, who survives.
He was a graduate of Richburg High School, class of 1984 and a graduate of Alfred State College, class of 1986. Mr. Barkley was a U.S. Navy veteran having served for 6 years during Desert Storm on the USS Cape Cod and in Ballston Spa, NY as a medic. After being discharged from the Navy, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving at Fort Riley, Kansas.
After his Army duties, Jamie worked for the Frito Lay Corporation in Lafayette, Indiana. Returning to Richburg in 2002, he was employed by the Friendship Dairies and also at the same time was employed part time by the Allegany County Jail as a corrections officer. In 2006, he became a full time corrections officer at the Allegany County Jail in Belmont.
He was a life member and third assistant fire chief of the Richburg Fire Company, where he also served as an EMT, was the chaplain for the department, worked bingo, was a past instructor for the Junior Fireman program, and was a former ambulance captain. The fire department was his life. He was an avid NASCAR fan. In his youth, Jamie was a Boy Scout in the Richburg troop, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greatest love was his family, especially his children.
Surviving besides his wife are his mother of Friendship; four children, Caitlynn N. Barkley, Justine P. Barkley, Franklin M. Barkley, and Daniel J. Barkley III, all at home; two brothers, Matthew I. (Tari) Barkley of Minot Air Force Base, Minot, ND and Aaron R. (Katie) Barkley of Richburg; two sisters, Christine R. (Kurt) Klein of Richburg and Amanda R. (Chad) Griswold of Bolivar; his maternal grandmother, Emogene C. Davison of Bolivar; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jamie was preceded in death by his father.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Richburg Fire Company, Main Street, Richburg, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013 with the Rev. David W. Herne, pastor of Heritage AFlame Ministries, Bolivar, officiating. Burial will be in Dimmick Cemetery, Town of Wirt.
The Military Forces Honor Guard-Burial detail from Horseheads and the Wellsville American Legion Post #702 Honor Guard will accord military honors on Thursday.
