Daniel F. Schoonover, Sr.
GOLD, PA----Daniel F. Schoonover, Sr., 69, of Gold, passed away in his home with his loving wife and son by his side on Saturday, April 27, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer under the care of Potter County Hospice.
Born April 12, 1944 in Coudersport, he was a son of Frank A. and Della Anna Nelson Schoonover. On October 9, 1965 in the Andrews Settlement Church, he married Jacqueline A. Mack, who survives.
Mr. Schoonover was a graduate of Northern Potter High School, Ulysses. Class of 1962. After high school, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Grand Canyon, the USS Davis and lastly on the USS Wilkinson. He served from May of 1962 to August of 1966, having toured six different countries and islands.
He was employed by Dresser-Rand in Wellsville, NY, retiring after 41 years of service. He also served as a Deputy Game Warden from 1971 to 1988 under H. Richard Curfman, Game Warden.
He was a member of the Potter County Anglers Club, Inc., having joined in 1967. An avid geocacher, Dan and his wife have located and visited 1320 geocaches, the first one being in Oregon, which was also the first one in the world. Danâs geocach name was Schooneyâs. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and wildlife photography.
Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Daniel F. Schoonover, Jr. of Genesee, Timothy F. (Kimberly) Schoonover of Blossburg, Major Michael G. (Madison) Schoonover of Springfield, VA, and Shawn R. (Celeste) Schoonover of Dalton, NY; four grandchildren, Taylor Schoonover, Bethany Schoonover, Micah Schoonover, and Luke Schoonover; four step-grandchildren, Jason Wimpelberg, Melanie Wimpelberg, Brandon Wimpelberg, and Joey Wimpelberg; seven step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald J. (Carol) Schoonover of Bamberg, SC; an uncle, Richard Nelson of Wellsville, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dan was predeceased by two brothers, George Schoonover and Marlin Schoonover.
At Danâs request there will be no public visitation or funeral services. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery, Oswayo.
