Dorothy M. Nelson “beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother”
SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa.---Dorothy M. Nelson, 84, of Shinglehouse, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022, in UPMC Cole Place, Coudersport, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born on Wednesday, May 18, 1938 at home in Bingham Center, she was a daughter of Adrian and Elsie Simmons Mills. On April 20, 1960 in Mills, she married Wayne A. Nelson, who survives.
She was a graduate of Northern Potter High School, Class of 1956. Dorothy served in the US Army from 1957 to 1960.
She worked for Potter County as a home health aide. She then graduated in 1979 from the former St. Francis School of Nursing in Olean, NY, as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was employed at various healthcare facilities in the area until her retirement.
Dorothy was a member of the Bell Run Union Church where she was a member of the choir. She was also involved with vacation Bible school and the Awanas. She was a member of the Oswayo Valley Senior Center in Shinglehouse and having enjoyed square dancing, she was a member of the former Grand Squares in Wellsville, N.Y.. Dorothy enjoyed camping with her family, traveling the US, knitting, quilting, music (both singing and playing instruments), bowling, crafting, and reading.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years; a son Rodney L. Nelson of Portageville, N.Y.; two daughters, Pamela (Greg) Maxson of Shinglehouse and Linda (Dale Jr.) Davis of Bolivar, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Kyle (Shauna) Maxson, Blake Maxson, Dustin (Teal) Davis and Drew Davis; six great-grandchildren, Finn and Boone Maxson, Bryce, Zachary, Damon, and Cade Davis; two brothers, James (Jackie) Mills of Westfield and Terry Mills of Ulysses; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by two sisters, Wilma Nelson and Anna VanEtten; and a brother, John Mills.
Family and friends may call from 10am to 12 noon on Friday, August 5, 2022, at the Bell Run Union Church, 904 Taylor Brook Road, Shinglehouse, where a memorial service will follow at 12 noon with Pastor Chad E. Shaffer, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bell Run Union Church, 904 Taylor Brook Road, Shinglehouse, PA 16748 or to the UPMC Cole Place Patient Activity Fund, 1001 East Second Street, Coudersport, PA 16915.
Dorothy’s family has entrusted her care and cremation arrangements to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
