Ernest E. Cowell, Sr. âpatriarch of the familyâ
LITTLE GENESEE, NY---Ernest E. âButchâ Cowell, Sr., 74, a lifelong resident of Little Genesee, passed away with his loving family by his side on Thursday, January 21, 2016, after a lengthy illness.
Born October 12, 1941 in Sayre, PA, he was a son of Ernest E. and Anna M. Vanderpool Cowell. On August 29, 1959 in Little Genesee, he married Margaret L. âPeggyâ Stone, who survives.
Butch attended Bolivar High School in Bolivar. He was a union contractor specializing in custom stone and concrete work.
He was a founding member of the Bolivar Watchdog Taxpayers Group and was a frequent contributor to the Letters to the Editor of area papers. Butch loved to be outdoors, living off the land, plowing, gardening, hunting, fishing, and especially trapping. He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and Buffalo Sabres fan. His greatest love was his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Ernie âJRâ Cowell and Daniel Cowell, both of Little Genesee, and Alfred Cowell of Friendship; two daughters, Penny (Ken) Marriott of Williamson and Patricia Barber of Elmira; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Butch was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Janet Lynn Cowell Smith.
Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. with his lifetime friend and best man, Mr. Lynn Lawton of Bolivar, officiating.
