Gary D. Calhoun âbeloved father, grandfather, and brotherâ
SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---Gary D. Calhoun, 76, of Shinglehouse, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, after a lengthy illness.
Born December 9, 1938 in Port Allegany, PA, he was a son of Golden R. and Marjorie F. Stonemetz Calhoun.
Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956 and served for over 20 years, attaining the rank of E6 (First Class Petty Officer). During his military career, he traveled extensively throughout the world. He also was a driver in the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy.
After retiring from the Navy, Gary was employed at the Olean General Hospital in Olean, NY as the department head for Central Supply. While employed there, he attended Jamestown Community College in Olean earning his associates degree in business. He was then employed by the North Carolina Prison System where he retired as a corrections officer.
He attended the former Evangelical United Brethren Church in Coneville and then later the Ceres United Methodist Church. He was a member of Sharon Lodge #598 F. & A.M. in Shinglehouse, a member of Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, and faithfully served with the Potter County Honor Guard. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, golfing, and watching westerns. He loved his dog Pugsley, but his greatest love was his family.
Surviving are a son, John G. (Lisa) Calhoun of Kernersville, NC; a daughter, Heidi (Ricky Nudd) Calhoun-Nudd of Shinglehouse; four grandchildren, Joel G. Calhoun, John T. Calhoun, Madison I. Nudd, and Holly B. Calhoun; two sisters, Maxine L. Rice of Shinglehouse and Gayle L. (Bernard) Zawrotny of Bath, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gary was predeceased by two brothers, Dennis D. Calhoun and an infant brother.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2014, with the Rev. Russell J. Horning, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, officiating. Burial will be in Rathbone Cemetery, Coneville.
Members of Sharon Lodge #598 F. & A.M. will conduct a memorial service at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord full military honors on Monday.
