Gertrude N. âGertâ Washburn âloving mother, grandmother & great-grandmotherâ
SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---Gertrude N. âGertâ Washburn, 86, of Shinglehouse, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2012, in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA, after a short illness.
Born August 4, 1926 in Eldred, she was a daughter of John H. and Hazel C. Lamb Soules. On May 14, 1944 in Olean, NY, she married Lloyd W. Washburn, who passed away on April 26, 2008.
Mrs. Washburn attended Eldred High School. She was employed for over 13 years at the former Acme Electric Company in Allegany, NY. She later owned and operated the former Gertâs Restaurant in Shinglehouse for several years and then worked for several families cleaning their homes.
Mrs. Washburn was a member of the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church and the Mary Marthaâs Class of the church. She was also a member of the Variety Club of Sharon Center, a group that meets monthly to make quilts for families who lose their possessions in fires. She was also a member of the former Sharon Grange. She enjoyed cooking and helping others.
Surviving are two sons, Frederick L. (Diana) Washburn of Celina, Tennessee and Richard M. Wright of Wellsville, NY; four daughters, Sharon L. Kottwitz of Shinglehouse, Karen N. (Barry) Brewer of Coudersport, Cynthia M. (John Mark) and Sandy L. (Tom) Martin, both of South Bend, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Washburn was predeceased by a son, Roy L. Washburn; a granddaughter, Miranda L. Wright; 4 brothers, Robert E. Soules, Dennison C. Soules, John H. Soules, and Ezra A. Soules; and 2 sisters, Betty E. Soules and Marie Biehler.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Gertâs home, Route 44 South, Shinglehouse, PA, where funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Sunday, November 4, 2012 with the Rev. Becky Edwards, pastor of the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Randall W. Headley, pastor of the Port Allegany United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse, PA.
