Hazel S. Bassage “beloved wife, mother, and grandmother”
PALMYRA, N.Y.---Hazel S. Bassage, 91, of Palmyra, formerly of Eldred, Pa. and Clara, Pa.,
passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, in St. Ann’s Home, Rochester.
Born on Wednesday, May 8, 1929, in Rochester, she was a daughter of Levi and Martha Vantoff Schlesing. On March 26, 1949 in Walworth, she married Claire F. Bassage, who survives.
Hazel was a graduate of Walworth High School, Class of 1946. For a short period of time, she was employed by Eastman Kodak in Rochester.
Hazel and Claire moved to Clara, Pa., residing there for over 30 years. In 2014, they moved to Eldred, Pa., living there until moving to Palmyra.
Hazel was a member of the First Baptist Church in Walworth. While living in Clara, she attended the Millport United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling, quilting and gardening.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband; five children, Cynthia L. (David) Lang of Culpeper, Virginia, Bruce L. Bassage of Palmyra, Glen A. Bassage of Phoenix, Arizona and Bondurant, Wyoming, Pamela A. Bassage of Ontario, and Judith L. (Linda Ragan) Bassage of Palm Bay, Florida; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Hovenar of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Hazel was predeceased by four brothers.
In keeping with Hazel’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Hazel entrusted her care and cremation arrangements to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, Pa.
