John C. Wood âbeloved father, grandfather, and brotherâ
SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---John C. Wood, 80, of Shinglehouse, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Coudersport, after a brief illness.
Born on November 24, 1935 in Bradford, he was a son of Philip and Alta Lucille Kelly Wood. On July 14, 1979 at the Ceres United Methodist Church, he married the love of his life, Melinda L. Walker, who went to be her Lord and Savior on August 18, 2013.
Mr. Wood graduated from Shinglehouse High School with the class of 1953. While a senior in high school, John enlisted in the New York State Army National Guard where he served from 1953 to 1954. On March 29, 1954, he enlisted in the US. Air Force. He served his country for over 21 years retiring on June 1, 1974. During his military career he spent two tours of duty (5 years) in Germany and one year in Vietnam (1966-1967) as a K-9 dog handler assigned to the 14th Air Commando Wing. Most recently he retired from the Maintenance/Engineering Department at the St. Francis and the Olean General Hospitals.
Mr. Wood was a member of the Bell Run Union Church in Shinglehouse where he taught Sunday school and served as a Trustee for 4 years. He was a past Commander of VFW Post 4127 in Homestead, Florida, a member of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, a member of the Disabled American Veterans; a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, a member of the Potter County Honor Guard, a member of the Bolivar Golf Club, and a life member of the Shinglehouse Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are two sons, T. Bryan Wood of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Michael B. (Linda) Wood of Longmont, Colorado; three daughters, Kelly S. Wood and Lee Ann Arnold, both of Dayton, Ohio, and Shannon M. (Joe) Rajczak of Coudersport; eleven grandchildren; two brothers, Richard L. (Beverly) Wood of West Warwick, RI and Pastor David A. (Barbara) Wood of Blountstown, Florida; a sister, Mary G. Blanchard of Pittsburgh; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his loving wife, John was predeceased by a sister, Constance L. Wood Austin.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Bell Run Union Church, Shinglehouse, where a memorial service will follow at 12 noon with the Rev. Chad E. Shaffer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Bell Run Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Thursday.
