Martha M. Holmberg âbeloved mother and grandmotherâ
SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---Martha M. Erhard Holmberg, 89, of Shinglehouse, formerly of Portville, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 1, 2012 in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.
Born May 25, 1923 in Ridgway, she was a daughter of Wilbur and Susie Walker Erhard. On February 11, 1942 in Ridgway, she married Arthur M. Holmberg, who passed away on August 22, 1989.
Mrs. Holmberg attended Ridgway High School. During World War II, Mrs. Holmberg served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy. She was later employed at Fibercel Corporation in Portville.
She resided in Portville for many years before moving to Shinglehouse. She attended the Methodist Church in Cyclone and also attended the Oswayo United Methodist Church. Martha was a devoted Meals on Wheels volunteer and was also a literacy volunteer. She was an accomplished tatter which art she passed on to her granddaughter, Debra Harley.
Surviving are three daughters, Sandie (Roy) Amidon of Oswayo, Kayleen (Kenneth) Bell and Bonnie (Dane) Surra, both of Shinglehouse; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Duane (Dorothy) Erhard of Seattle, Washington, William Erhard of New Jersey, and John (Edna) Erhard of Portville, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Holmberg was predeceased by a son Arthur M. Holmberg, Jr.; and a sister, Betty Groat.
Private funeral services will be held at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse. Burial will follow in Homer Cemetery, Inez, PA.
