Peggy J. Leilous “loving wife, mother, and grandmother”

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa.---Peggy J. Leilous, 90, of Shinglehouse, passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, March 6, 2021, after a short illness.

Born at home in Shinglehouse on Sunday, May 4, 1930, she was a daughter of Henry M. Sr. and Anah B. Taylor Terrette. On April 11, 1947 in Allegany, N.Y., she married Donald E. “Ducky” Leilous, Sr., who passed away on June 26, 1988.

Anticipation in December with the arrival of flower and gardening catalogs, started Peggy’s plans for spring flower planting. She enjoyed going to estate sales and making gel candles with her daughter, Linda. Peggy enjoyed sitting on her porch having coffee and eating ice cream with her family when they came to visit. Peggy was a talented artist who played the organ by ear and was very creative in anything she did. She was an excellent cook and baker and was known for her large family gatherings. She loved being on the farm. Her greatest loves were her family, gardening and cooking.

Surviving are four children, Joyce Allen of Saylorsburg, Donald (Tina Rittburg) Leilous, Jr. of Shinglehouse, Susan (Dale) Kamery of Portville, N.Y., and Christine (Butch) Jones of Oswayo; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Garold (Betty) Terrette of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Gorden Terrette of Acworth, Georgia; two sisters, Patricia Danforth and Pudge (Don) Sturdevant, both of Shinglehouse; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Peggy was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Leilous who passed away on March 9, 2006; two brothers, Henry M. “Bud” Terrette, Jr. and James Terrette; three sisters, Rebecca Stonemetz, Marian Kemp, and Eva Simons; and a son-in-law, Herbert Allen, Sr.

Private graveside burial services will be held in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse, with the Rev. Russell J. Horning, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 310 East State Street, Olean, NY 14760.

Peggy’s family has entrusted her care to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
