Phyllis V. Shall âbeloved mother and grandmotherâ
OSWAYO, PA----Phyllis V. Shall, 93, of Oswayo, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013 in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, after a long illness.
Born October 5, 1919 in Roulette, she was a daughter of Ortie W. and Nellie B. Fox Hathaway. On October 4, 1941 in Bolivar, NY, she married Paul J. Shall, who passed away on August 13, 1999.
Mrs. Shall attended schools in North Stratford, NH, Rutland, VT, Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada where she was a track standout, Shinglehouse High School, and graduated in 1938 from Collingswood High School, Collingswood, NJ.
In 1963, Mrs. Shall along with her husband, purchased the former Pearsallâs General Store in Oswayo, becoming Shallâs General Store, which they operated until the time of Paulâs death. Mrs. Shall also assisted her husband who was the longtime postmaster in Oswayo. Mrs. Shall served on the Oswayo Valley School Board. During her years of service she was instrumental in the starting of the IU9 program. She was also the longtime secretary of the Wells Cemetery Association in Oswayo.
Mrs. Shall was a life member of St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Shinglehouse. She was a member of St. Theresa Guild, a member of the former Rebekah Lodge in Oswayo, and a member of the Wednesday Night Bowlerettes in Shinglehouse. Mrs. Shall was an avid bowler traveling extensively and competing in many tournaments. She loved to read, solve crossword puzzles and garden.
Surviving are a son, Michael P. (Beth) Shall of Oswayo; two daughters, Susan J. (Bucky) Amidon of Oswayo and Gina C. Shall of Frankfort, Kentucky; thirteen grandchildren; twenty seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward (Dorthy) Hathaway of Welland, Ontario, Canada and Jack Hathaway of Watkins Glen, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Shall was predeceased by two sons, Gregory W. Shall, who died on September 12, 2003, and Jeffrey A. Shall, who died on October 17, 2011; two grandsons, Christopher A. Shall, who died on April 21, 1996, and Lucas A. Shall, who died on August 6, 2004; a brother, William A. Hathaway; and two step-brothers, Keith Carroll and Alan Carroll.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2013 in St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, South Puritan Street, Shinglehouse, with the Rev. Thomas E. Brown, pastor, as celebrant. Committal services and burial will be in Wells Cemetery, Oswayo.
The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.
