Richard E. “Dick” Allen, Sr.       “beloved husband, father and grandfather”

SHINGLEOUSE, PA----Richard E. “Dick” Allen, Sr., 76, of Shinglehouse, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.
     Born August 3, 1937 in Elizabeth, NJ, he was a son of William H. and Elizabeth Jarvis Allen.  On April 27, 1958 in Elizabeth, NJ, he married Irene Mesko, who survives.
     He received his G.E.D. from Rutgers College in Trenton, NJ.  Mr. Allen served in the National Guard for 10 years.
    He was employed for 27 years by the Rahway Police Department in Rahway, NJ, retiring in August of 1996 as a Traffic Motorcycle Officer, attaining the rank of Corporal.   Previously he had been employed in the construction industry.
     Dick had a camp in Roulette for many years.  He retired to Shinglehouse in August of 1996, operating the family farm on Blauvelt Hollow Road.  Dick loved his John Deere farm tractors and equipment.
     Mr. Allen was a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bell Run Union Church.  He was a member of the Retired P.B.A. in Rahway.  He was a former member of the Monday Night City Bowling League in Shinglehouse.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid outdoorsman.
     Surviving besides his wife are two sons, William H. Allen and Richard E. “Richie” (Kari) Allen, Jr., both of Shinglehouse; two grandchildren, Nicholas J. (Tabby) Allen and Alexis N. Allen, both of Shinglehouse; a great-grandson, Troy Allen; and several nieces and nephews.
     In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by two brothers, William Allen, Jr. and Benjamin Allen.
     Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2013 with the Rev. Chad E. Shaffer, pastor of Bell Run Union Church, officiating.  Burial will be in the Allen Family Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
     Flowers are gratefully declined and will be provided by the family.  Memorials may be made to Bell Run Union Church, 904 Taylor Brook Road, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
