Rita G. Stewart âbeloved matriarchâ
EAST AURORA, NY---Rita G. Stewart, 94, of East Aurora, NY, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, PA, after a short illness.
Born March 29, 1920 in Binghamton, NY, she was a daughter of Richard M. and Nellie D. McMahon Gilbert. On April 20, 1944 in Binghamton, she married Richard W. Stewart who passed away on November 27, 1999.
Rita was a graduate of Binghamton High School and a graduate of Charles S. Wilson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Johnson City, NY.
She was employed by IBM in Binghamton for a short period of time during World War II. For the greater part of her life, Rita, along with her husband, was an entrepreneur in the family business.
Rita was Roman Catholic by faith. She was a life master in Bridge and she loved to play golf. She was a volunteer with the Aurora Childrenâs Theatre, a volunteer with the Hospice in East Aurora, was an American Red Cross volunteer, and was active in the Erie County Republican Committee.
Surviving are a son, Gilbert R. (Carol) Stewart of Wellsville, NY; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Stephen) Kirk of Houston, TX, Jonathan S. Smith of Baltimore, MD, Elizabeth S. (Thomas) Kurilovitch of Victor, NY, and Kristin J. (Aaron Mesler) Clower of Shinglehouse, PA; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Rita was predeceased by two daughters, Margaret âSunnyâ and Jacqueline; and a sister, Mary Stewart.
Friends may call at the Howe Funeral Home, 64 Maple Road, East Aurora, NY on Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
