Russell Eugene âGeneâ Wood âthe Gardenerâ
COUDERSPORT, PA----Russell Eugene âGeneâ Wood, 70, of Coudersport, PA, formerly of Keating Summit, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2014 in the Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY, after a long illness.
Born June 14, 1943 in Rochester, PA, he was a son of Russell M. and Helen Claire Griffen Wood. On September 4, 1965 in Erie, PA, he married Bonnie Brydon, who survives.
Gene was a graduate of Penn State University and a graduate of Townson State College in Baltimore, MD. He held degrees in forestry, business administration, and accounting.
Mr. Wood was a U.S. Army veteran attaining the rank of sergeant, having served with the Military Intelligence Imagery Interpretation Division during the Vietnam War.
He served as vice president/chief financial officer at Minard Run Oil Company in Bradford, retiring after 25 years of service.
Gene was a natural dyer, âcreating colors from the forestâ using natural materials found in the local woods. He loved his pets. He was instrumental as a resident of Sweden Valley Manor in helping to expand Yesterdays Garden, facilitating resident participation earning him the nickname, âThe Gardenerâ.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Ira James (Tanya) Wood of Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother, E. Ernest (Susan) Wood of Murrells Inlet, SC; a sister, Marita (Bruce) Johnson of Springfield, VT; and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Geneâs wishes, there will be no formal services. Burial will be in Gardeau Cemetery, Keating Summit.
