Tyrus R. Wilcox âformer Shinglehouse, Pa residentâ
NORTH TONAWANDA, NY---Tyrus R. Wilcox, 101, of North Tonawanda, formerly of Shinglehouse, PA, passed away Friday, December 5, 2014 in Schofield Residence, Kenmore, after a brief illness.
Born August 25, 1913 in Shinglehouse, PA, he was a son of Robert and Pearl Perry Wilcox. He was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, class of 1932.
He played baseball on the high school team and the town team, being an outstanding pitcher. After high school he played for the Elmira (NY) Red Wings, the farm team for the St. Louis Cardinals and later moved to North Carolina where he played semi-professional baseball. He then moved to Charleston, WV where he was employed by DuPont and also played on their baseball team. Moving back to the Buffalo area, he was employed by the Curtis Wright Aircraft Plant during World War II. Mr. Wilcox retired from the GM and Chevrolet Forge Plant in Tonawanda in 1976.
Mr. Wilcox was a sports enthusiast enjoying car races. He had also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are a son, Terry C. Wilcox of North Tonawanda; a daughter, Brenda L. (Ronald) McMaster of Tonawanda; seven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Sims of Lakeland, Florida; and three nieces and three nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilcox was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Macdonald; and by his former wife, Marjorie Cobb Ladd.
Friends may call at the Wattengel Funeral Home (new location), 533 Meadow Drive, North Tonawanda, on Monday, December 8, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at which time funeral services will follow with Pastor Ken Keenan, chaplain of Hospice Buffalo, officiating. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda.
