Walter Jack Hewitt “beloved husband, father and grandfather”
NORTH BINGHAM, Pa.---Walter Jack Hewitt, 77, beloved husband and father, of North Bingham, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021, in UPMC Cole, Coudersport, following a long illness.
Born on Monday, March 20, 1944 in Nutley, N.J., he was a son of Walter Jack Sr. and Jeanne Amanda Kane Hewitt. On June 24, 1995, at their home in Port Allegany, he married Amy J. Wilson, who survives.
After graduating from Bayley Ellard High School in Madison, NJ, in 1962, Jack immediately enlisted in the US Navy, serving from 1962 to 1966, before being honorably discharged.
Moving to Pennsylvania, he was employed at various lab and factory positions before choosing a career in nursing, first as a LPN then after graduating from Alfred State College as a RN. He worked in the ER, ICU, and as a supervisor at the former Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport, retiring after 21 years in 2008.
Jack focused his retirement on his “farm” becoming an avid homesteader. He was a lover of books, dogs, the Finger Lakes, and was a gifted artist. He also became a skilled carpenter, building anything on the homestead his wife could imagine.
In addition to his wife, Amy, he is survived by four children, Jacki (David) Laberge, Teri (Rick) Slocum, Christopher Hewitt, and Jason (Mellissa) Hewitt; a stepdaughter, Connie Sauve; two sisters, Kathleen (Al Rohrer) Kinard and Susan (Lee) Ryerson; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be live streamed on Facebook.com\hvalliance at 5:30pm on Saturday, November 6, 2021, with Pastor Kevin Cornish of the Harrison Valley Alliance Church, officiating. This will allow Jack’s many friends to attend virtually.
Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors at the church.
Memorials in Jack’s name may be made to any animal charity of the donor’s choice.
A heartfelt thank you to all who have supported Amy and her parents with prayers, meals and so much else during this sad time.
