Walter L. Newton       “beloved husband, father and grandfather”

SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---Walter Lee Newton, 70, of Shinglehouse, a beloved patriarch of the Newton family, passed away at home in “his chair” Friday, April 22, 2016 from an apparent heart attack.
Born June 24, 1945 in Shinglehouse, he was a son of Lyle and Freda M. Webster Newton.  On September 14, 1968 in Shinglehouse, he married Sherryl Smith, who survives.
Walt was a graduate of Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse.  He served his country in the U.S. Army having been deployed to Germany in 1966.  He was very proud of our country and all servicemen and women.
He was always surrounded by his family and you would find him in “his chair” watching a Pirates game or ready to discuss the latest news on politics or the military.  He was a master of trivia, chess, euchre, or anything related to sports or the military that you could name.   He could always be counted on for a very witty conversation.
Walt loved baseball.  He was a member and managed the Shinglehouse town baseball team for years.  He had also managed the Legion team in Shinglehouse.  He was a hard-core Pittsburgh Pirates fan.
He fiercely loved his children and grandchildren, spending a great amount of time with them.  He taught his grandchildren chess, crazy trivia, and his witty sense of humor.  He rarely missed their sporting events despite his illness.  He will be sorely missed.
Surviving besides his amazing wife of 47 years are two sons, Lance (Jody) Newton and Thomas Newton, both of Shinglehouse; two grandsons, Tyler Newton of Shinglehouse and Garrett Newton of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two step-granddaughters, Lorin Torrey and Sydney Torrey, both of Shinglehouse; a brother, Lawrence “Cub” (Yolanda) Newton; a sister, Barbara Troup; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Walt was predeceased by a sister, Gail Hancock.
There will be no public visitation or funeral services.  Please remember Walt “Newt” in a way that will make you smile.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Walt’s family has entrusted his care to the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
